Can anypone recommend an engine specialist in the Midlands (esp near Leicester). My 1776 is way down on power and I need to get it checked out. All the ones I know are in the South, South West or North.

Cheers

These guys seem to be well recommended but they did some set up work on my van when owned by the previous keeper and the output figures i have seen were not too high (no fault of themselves I am sure). I suspect some piston damage/low compression (nothing more expensive I hope). I have heard that the van was running too hot prior to deep sump/ external coller/fan install.

Regards
Nick

What do they mean by too hot ? people often shit themselves when they fit temp gauges to these motors and see the temps.... its common to be up around 120-130 degrees C....dependant on so many things...
road temp
cooling tin (shiny will run hotter) stock heavy tin in black will be cooler
Oil your running
hot to cold area seals leaking (replace)
timing
carb set up
thermostat
blocked /restricted oil galleys are common with high milage blocks (flush the block out either chem flush, compressed air or jet washer(just flush it with oil afterwards))
and of course driving style
amongst others

See my other thread re engine running temps the unit in question is a Remtech 1776 I have spoken to Remtech Europe and allegedly the van had been to number of (respected) specialists and the then owner was advised the motor was running too hot was missing some bottom tin and was in need of setting up/jetting. All of this work was subsequently done and now if anything is running too cool on short runs. The car was rollling roaded setup and jetted and the max output chart I have seen is 59bhp and 99 lb/ft torque. I can only assume the bhp figure was at the rear wheels as the engine should be putting out approx 110bhp at the flywheel but even allowing for losses throught the transmission this would piut me about 30+ break down at the wheels.

Cheers
