Tatty steering wheel

I picked up an original steering wheel last year that had been painted blue (Stonor Park). I had it resprayed black but the paint fell off when a small gerbil brushed past it.
Anybody successfully resprayed or power coated theirs?

That's the trouble with painted ones. Original factory steering wheels were extensively tested with a range of EU approved rodents.
