Hi , so my engine is out and I wanted to remove my crank pulley for powder coating ,

Is it a case of flywheel lock , undo nut , use a pulley removal tool ? ( does anyone know where's best to get the removal tool from as well ? )

Never taken one off before so any help will be most appreciated
Cheers all ;-)

I assume your using a stock pulley.

you've just about got it.

the only thing i would suggest is that u use a puller which goes through the holes near the center of the pulley.

If you use a normal 3 leg puller on the outer edge it will bend the pulley and crush the v which the belt sits in.

You can get a specially designed VW crank puller from most aircooled specialists if you haven't already got the right type of puller.

Hi ,
Yeah it's just a stock pulley , just wanted to get it powder coated to tidy up my engine a little . That's the puller I was looking at ;-) .
Cool don't seem like to much of a job .

I remove my pulley with a BIG flat head screwdriver and a rubber mallet. Place the end of the screwdriver up tight against the crank shaft at the back of the pulley. A couple good hits, with the screwdriver up against the pulley, towards the front of the engine (rear of the bus) and it should pop right off. If you try to pry it off you will definitely warp the pulley. Of course a pulley puller is always recommended but the method I use, as seen in the "Bug Me" videos, hasn't failed yet and would be pretty darn hard to damage the crank shaft.
