This is a rare opportunity to acquire a very straight, very original and absolutely RUST FREE RIGHT HAND DRIVE Split Screen VW Kombi Microbus.

This vehicle was built in April 1964 in Germany and exported to Australia where it was sold by a Melbourne VW Dealer in June 1964 to it's first owner. The bus had a pretty easy life for the next 25 or 30 years before the engine gave up and the bus was sold to the owner of a VW specialist just outside Melbourne. He realised how incredibly straight and rust / dent free this bus was and carefully parked it in a corner of his workshop, intending to rebuild the engine for his family to use the splitty.

His VW restoration / repair and parts business took off and the splitty project got largely forgotten, sitting gathering dust (but not rust) in the corner of the workshop. Fast forward another 15 years or so until my friend wanders into the workshop last year and spots the very dusty but obviously very good splitty in the corner. The garage owner wasn't interested in selling at first but after a lot of persuasion we became the proud owners of a very original bus.

As the body and underside was so good we treated the bus to a complete bare metal strip down and repaint inside and out. This van has had very little welding or repair over the years and has absolutely zero rust.

We have loads of before / during / after photos of the restoration work. The bus had new window rubbers put in before the glass was refitted. Meanwhile it had a mechanical overhaul as well, the brakes , brake lines, fuel lines, suspension, steering etc were stripped and rebuilt and loads of new parts fitted. The blown engine was replaced with a newly re-built 1600cc unit which starts on the button and runs superbly. While it was out the tinware etc was also painted and brand new fuel pump and a reconditioned carb were fitted before the engine went back in.

The wheels were painted to match the body colour and the van now sits on 4 new tyres. All that survived from the original interior was the front single and double seats. These have just be professionally re-upholstered.

The van was then carefully packed into a container and shipped to the UK where it arrived a week ago.

All the import duties and VAT have been paid (if you buy an imported vehicle make sure this has been done as you can't register them with the DVLA unless you can provide the receipt for the duty paid). We will also supply a letter from VW confirming the manufacture date which you need to ensure the DVLA give the van an age related registration number appropriate to a 1964 van.

If you are still reading I assume it sounds good so far!

It needs a few minor parts to finish it off – it is missing the bumpers, a few door seals and a handle for the cargo doors etc but is basically all there and ready to go.

To get the bus on the road you will need an MOT, an insurance certificate (both can be issued just on the chassis number as it is an import) and the £50 registration fee for the DVLA. It really is that simple. A couple of weeks later you'll get the V5 log book showing the van's new registration and your name as the 1st keeper in the UK.

This split screen van is a blank canvas – the options for want you want to put in it are unlimited – a day van, surf bus, fully fitted camper or just the coolest people carrier to ever do a school run – you decide!

It is obviously tax exempt and any inspection is welcome. There are more details and photos here:

The van is in Woking, Surrey if you would like to view it.

Sorry, not looking for swaps or trade-ins.

Looking for £10,995.

Thanks for your interest.

Kerry.
