pop pop bang! rough running engine! Help needed :-)

After a trip to Volksweald last weekend, the bus started playing up and subsequently broke down on the M25! As it was hot on Sunday we only drove at 50mph as we thought this was best. After 22miles the van started stuttering (pulling back) and the pop pop bang out of the exhaust multiple times whilst i was trying to get to the hard shoulder before cutting out. The van would re start when warm but kept back firing, when cold it started and ran rough but no back firing.
Called the AA and get relayed to Thurrock services. took 17 hrs to get me the 50miles home after 3 recovery trucks and a transit man who might i add though the engine was in the front! after he asked if the coolant was topped up and told him to get me a truck as you have no idea!!

So, the engine is a 1776 by the engine company, running with twin ICT 34 webbers (genuine not cheap ones) running on an electronic dizzy and standard fuel pump. Van had been fine until we broke down with the only thing being done other than checking fuel lines etc was fitting a new battery inc a new leisure battery since our last run out.

I have read that it could be the coil but Im stumped at what else it could be unless i replace the dizzy, coil, plugs etc. Would a faulty coil make it run that bad? Or could it be the carbs?

Just swap out the coil first, if you change everything you won't know what has caused the issue in the first place.

Have you checked your timing? Sounds like that May be out. I’d check valves, timing and coil spark.

If it was running perfectly fine up to the point it happened I'd blame the coil, or condenser if running a stock ignition system

Ok, will look at changing the coil, will see what JK and Heritage have in stock.

I had a very similar thing recently. Engine also from the VW Engine Company.

New coil - appears to have solved it.

Just buy a generic coil, it'll be cheaper and last as long.

Interested to hear others' opinions on this, but I would go with BOSCH, Schofield sells them (£29):

Sound to me like poor spark because of faulty electronic ignition system . I just junked my ignitor 3 shite following terrible performance and finally a total break down with no spark. I went back to points with copper leads and bosh coil . Now it runs sweet.

Suggest you go for a 123 dizzy.

Listening to what most people have to say about various ignition set ups. Unless you’re running something unusual that needs very different characteristics like Mallory you’re best off right now with either stock points etc or the 123 set up. Only because so many people seem to be getting let down by systems that were once revered but are now wholly made or the parts are made In the orient somewhere. Somewhere where cost and large numbers produced are the only factors in their modern world. This isn’t my experience but a generalisation of reading threads of issues on here and on several other VW forums and older car forums across the board. I’m stock right now and never really had an issue but I might end up with a 123 if anything goes Pete Tong. One of my pals swears by lumenition but I’m doubtful they still exist.

I'm a bit late to this but I had this sort of problem a few years ago.
It was caused by the ignition switch and replacing it fixed it.
