I was going to put my spare 1303 S box up for sale as I've got a filthy diesel and 5 speed box to put in the crewie. But I aint going to get this done for the show season so was planning on using the existing 1500 singleport and bus box. Then I thought about using the 1303 box.

The question is will a 1500 singleport have enough oomph to push the taller gearing?

You might find it gets a bit warm on the motorway.

I'd reckon it'd be a bit slow on the hills.

I've got a 5 speed with a similar top gear ratio to an AT box, and with a twin-carb 1600 it only just has enough oomph on the motorway. And I've got a 4th gear similar to the standard bay 'box to go back to, which the Beetle box doesn't... :)

You will struggle with Hill's and also in the gap between 3rd and 4th,

You will be ragging 3rd gear and pull into 4th and it will be labouring.

I would not recommend it, your putting the box and engine under excessive load.

If you use one of the many online tyre size calculators you may be able to mitigate the over gearing of a beetle box on a 1600 engined t2. (By using smaller wheel/tyre combination).

Alternatively you will need a more powerful engine or be prepared to spend a lot of time in third gear I think.
