For Sale 1968 LHD Westfalia Early Bay, Ronnie. £17,000
I imported the bus from Huntington Beach in California in 2010.
Since then it’s been stored in a garage (we had one custom built!) and as a result is rust free.
He’s beautiful and was restored in California just before we bought him.
I have the original log book/manual which shows the registration in Santa Barbara.
It’s all original and very reliable. In the 5 years we’ve had him we’ve been to Europe several times as well as the normal UK trips. However mileage over the last 3 years has been just 3,000 miles.
When I imported it I had it steam cleaned underneath undersealed using schwatz which is much better than normal waxoyl.
It’s been regularly serviced by Bristol Cherished Cars (who are brilliant and VW specialists).
It has 11 months MOT and a tune up service a month ago.
The engine is a stock 1600 engine with original air filter and single carb. I always kept that as it’s the most reliable set up. It does have the heat exchanger removed and a custom exhaust. This was done in California and helps the engine run more efficiently.
It only ever broke down once in 2013 when the front left drum seized up. We had the full brake system rebuilt by Kombi Klassics in Wareham with a new master cylinder and wheel cyclinders. Other than that it’s been incredibly reliable.
I also had a Propex HS2211 External Gas Air Heater installed by Propex themselves in Ringwood. This is installed underneath with a small LPG tank that is filled through a connection in the engine bay. It really is a great solution. They hooked it up into the original heating pipes and an additional outlet in the back. As a result the heating actually works in the winter. It also works when the bus is travelling. It will defrost a windscreen very quickly also. However I never tested that as it always spends the winters tucked up in the garage. No way I wanted salt on it!
The interior is the original Westfalia interior but we took out the ice box to give us more room. Plus the Westfalia ice box is rubbish compared to a £50 Coleman cool box we have.
Includes the hammock across the front seats which my 3 year old son loves! Also includes the frame for the roof bed. I've never used it as I don't have the canvas but I'm sure that will be inexpensive to get made up.
Tyres are all good condition with plenty of tread left.
I plan to take it to the Bristol Volkfest on Saturday 18th June so please let me know if you would like to see it.
If it doesn’t sell at Bristol Volkfest I’m based in Malmesbury which is 10 mins north of the M4 J17. 35 mins to Bristol Centre. 25 mins to swindon, 40 mins Bath.
