Sorry to dredge up an old post but did you find the cause of this? Very similar to how our bus is at the moment, seems to get loud at around 55 but can be driven through it just the same

The tabs push up in between the cylinders, above the pushrod tubes. Id imagine after 16 years they may just be spares as i believe they get quite hot without them.
If you look up from underneath the engine you will either see these above the pushrod tubes or just the cylinders.

Is there a way if fitting these without removing the heads? Alternatively how important are they to efficient cooling of the engine, I'd rather have them but if I can get...
Iv just bought a scat bottom pulley with degree ring on it. In the packet there was a wierd washer type thing with no mention of it in the instructions. Am i right in thinking its a spacer to push the pulley away from the case (towards rear of the van) ? Thus aligning the fanbelt?

I had this recently on my 68. Turns out the switch was nackered, removed it from the back of the barrel and laced it in wd40 and started with a screwdriver. It was fine just for getting the van home but i replaced it straight away and had no trouble since.
