last week my indicators were perfect

this week, when i indicate right it:
: occasionally works perfect
: occasionally dunt work at all
: occasionally flashes on, waits a second then turns off, for a couple of seconds, then on again

I know that asking about electrical gremlins on a 50 yr old loom is pretty likely to result in a whole range of replies, but before i spend a weekend with a multi-meter is there anything obvious to try to investigate/rectify first?

Check your fuses for a poor contact. Mine did this and it turned out that left and right work off different fuses. One was a bit corroded and had a intermittent connection.

I have a similar problem in that the indicator will stick on & not flash.
Problem is the relay and been trying to get hold of the old style (new style requires some modification)
Solution at moment is if I pull hazards lights and close immediately it seems to reset the relay and indicators flash again :)
