I have got the engine in the van and hooked up. Went to turn the engine over to prime the pump which went fine but with one rather large hitch ... oil started coming out of the pump cover. I just fitted the paper gasket in the gasket kit with no sealer and torqued to the recommended spec.

Is it possible to remove the pump cover with the engine still in the van ... by jacking up to remove the moustache bar and endeavouring to remove sundry tin and the pulley wheel?

Should I refit the cover with a thin layer of permatex plus paper gasket?
Yes, it`s possible to do it with the engine in, just drop the oil first.
Get a piece of flat glass and a sheet of 150 sandpaper.
Using a marking pen, colour the flat surface of the cover. Place the sandpaper on the glass and start sanding the cover. Check if it`s flat; you will be surprised
After getting it really flat, apply a smear of permatex on the gasket, and using two fingers to spread, just wet the gasket with it. That`s how i do it.

Thanks Abel,

I took the pump cover off tonight - worked a treat. Will get going with the sandpaper and glass tomorrow and see how we go - hadn't heard of this trick, wish I had done it first time around.

I found the Empi cast iron covers i use are coming slightly warped, a pain to get straight. The alu ones are easier to make right if they come defective.

Mine is the Empi cast iron version. I marked the face up with marker and sanded on glass as suggested ... pretty much took all of the marker off in one go. However, there were radial machining marks on the face and I found that by sanding they faded out at different points - so continued to sand until I had a smooth face with only a remnant of the machining marks in the centre of the cover. Took quite a time.

So fingers crossed it sorts the problem. I fitted last night with the thin smear of permatex just wetting the gasket as suggested. I will get the exhaust back on and try firing it up again tonight ... so fingers crossed.

thanks again for the input. :D

yep, that's the one I got from Cool Air.

I got the engine up and running tonight and so far so good ... not a drop of oil as far as I can tell - will check all around again tomorrow.

Found it using there part number https://www.coolairvw.co.uk/Item/Shop_by_Vehicle~Beetle_Products~Beetle_Miscellaneous_Products~Hoses_and_Fittings~Brass_Fittings/BARB38D45/3-8_NPT_45_Degree_Adapters_-OB-Full_Flow-C-_Oil_Pumps-C-_Etc-CB-.html

Just for other people looking to do the same

I normally tap the cover a bit more with a 3/8"NPT tap so the fitting sits one or two threads before it bottoms out. That way there is no need for any clearancing on the Early Bay moustache bar. On Late Bays it needs just a tiny bit of clearancing on the support bar.
