Loverly pics and liking the mods to the battery terminals - great idea.
Plus, the solar panel install looks very professional :)

Thanks Andy, the solar panel took a lot of planning but was quite simple in the end. I hope it will keep the LB topped up when camping. [emoji3]

Couple of updates, I’ve added a rear anti roll bar and a CSP dissy with vacuum.
The ARB compliments the heavy duty front one I added in 2014. I can’t believe it’s so long ago ! I should have added this at the time really.
There’s a definite improvement in stability and driving experience.

Also after many years with a Pertronix 1 dissy 009 flavour, I decided to try dissy with a vacuum advance. I went for the CSP dissy as I like their stuff at the moment. [emoji23] (see exhaust, shifter)

The Pertronix has been fine although I have little to compare it against in experience, but have fancied a vac advance dissy for a while. On the test drive it seems a bit smoother with less stutter at low revs when accelerating. I just need to shorten the leads as they are quite long.

Where did you purchase the distributor from Mike? I just had a quick google search and nothing in the Uk jumped out at me.

It is on my shopping list to replace our 009 at some point, especially now that the magnet plate has had to be glued in place to remove the play that has appeared in it [emoji23]

I bought it direct from CSP, their online shop. I haven’t seen them anywhere for sale in the UK. It was about £20 delivery.

Nice upgrades again Mike!

Thanks Harry, no more camping allowed at the moment where I am, but it’s not the best weather this time of year any way. I may consider an early spring weekend getaway next year if the rules allow. [emoji41]

So I want to get my steering box refurbed as it’s 51 years old AFAIK. It has a slight weep of oil which needs attention.
I used a great guide from the samba forum 1968-1972 steering box replacement as well as reading up on here.

Got a two arm puller off eBay as the drop arm can be difficult to remove from the peg shaft on the steering box. I sprayed WD40 on the drop arm and peg shaft for a couple of weeks before attempting to remove it.

I jacked up the front end and used axle stands.
Unscrewed the steering column cover plate inside the cab.
Then underneath I removed the cotter pin from the castle nut on the peg shaft.

Then undo the castle nut to show the marks on the drop arm and peg shaft (quite faint). When the box is replaced these need to align.

After I cleaned up the nut and peg shaft, It’s important to screw the castle nut back on, leaving it loose though, so when the drop arm comes away suddenly it doesn’t fall on you.

I put the puller on the drop arm and tightened it up. There’s a handy dimple on the peg shaft to match the screw on the puller which keeps it in position.

There was a sharp crack and the drop arm came away from the shaft!

Ok so next I un bolted the pinch bolt from the coupling flange above the steering box. There’s a piece of metal bent around the bolt head and the nut to keep them in place. I had to bend this out of the way of the nut so I could unscrew it. The bolt came away easily and I could then push up the coupling disk away from the worm spindle on the steering box.

Deb bought me some gloves with little lights on them which worked quite well [emoji3]

Then it’s just a matter of undoing the four mounting bolts on the chassis for the steering box, and lifting it out whilst pushing the coupler up out of the way.

Quite pleased with a fairly straightforward job in the end [emoji3060]

Lovely detailed and well illustrated write up Mike!, thanks :D

(You did omit a link to the 'illumi-gloves' though)

Great work Mike ... that floor’s comfy isn’t it. I should know, I’ve spent enough time lay down on mine this week [emoji1787].

Are you refurbishing it yourself, if so, looking forward to the pics [emoji106]

Thanks Liam, I hope others can learn from my work or it will help in some way!
The gloves were actually quite useful but I’m not sure how durable they will be. There’s plenty on eBay if you search for glove lights.

The foam floor was a great tip thanks [emoji2956] I was using a camping roll mat but these are better, much nice to lie on and the surface is easy to slide in and out on from underneath the van.

I intend to send the ‘box to Graham at MEB. I had thought about having a go myself but now spring is here I might get impatient [emoji23]

A great read, and nice pics.

Gloves with lights? Whatever next?

Thanks, the gloves were not bad at all, I also bought myself a new magnetic LED work lamp which is a great help as it’s small enough to stick on some metal part and doesn’t fall off.

Haha [emoji38] I know, we won’t be able to go camping until 12th April in England so I’ve got some time yet. What about you is it the same ?
