D’oh! You can cheat and put a G clamp or similar on the pistons to stop them popping out. This has the added advantage of meaning that each pump of the pedal forces the air and fluid out of the nipple, rather than some of the movement being taken up by the pads moving against the drum. Sometimes easier to do it this way as you have a little more access space to the bleed nipple and no risk of getting fluid on the pads.

Good idea. Didn’t think of that !

I bled the brakes with the drums back on and hand tightened the hub nut.

Top springs are slightly different to the new ones

Bottom springs. New ones on right.

Decided to put the two smaller springs in place of the single lower spring. I’m not sure how much difference it makes but there is a slight difference I guess.

Got the drums back on and bled the brakes without any more drama [emoji23]

Adjusted the star adjusters and then the handbrake cables. There is a slight drag on the drums but I hope it will be ok. [emoji1696]

Wheels on and off the axle stands. Just need to tighten up the hub nuts now.

Thanks for the comments. Restoring the engine bay and engine out jobs at times felt like I’d taken on too much. I can see how it can take years if you are doing a complete resto.

I am actually dreaming about working on the van now [emoji23]

Apart from getting the engine and gearbox refitted there is mainly just some wiring to do for the new worry gauges. Oil temp and pressure and tachometer.

Great work  and yes, it does take years and due to life (and death) it seems to just keep on going :(

Shakedown drive. The engine and rebuilt gearbox are finally in, so I took Monty out for a test drive.
Man, this engine is freakin awesome ! The pickup from standing is fantastic so much better than my old engine.
The gears ratios feel great, there is so much more there, you can tell the engine just wants to go.

A big thanks to Abel for the engine: 2007cc, with a SSP 78mm 4340 crank, Scat C25 cam, and dual Weber 34 ICT carbs.
John Walklett for the freeway flyer style gearbox
And also to Paul Weeding for installing them for me.
