angle of the road makes it looks like some epic rake!

Nice rake!!
Early bays are low lights..... Late bays have the indicators high up next to the grille. Late bays also have bigger air intake vents on the rear 1/4s and bigger rear lights.
You could always de-code the M-plate and that should tell you exactly what it is/should be

I've got a 'K' reg. which is a crossover. Can't see the rear lights, but got a gut feeling it's a crossover. You'll dig deeper and deeper now for information and get keen on all things volkswagen bay. Welcome to the world of pleasure

71 is same as mine. Not a crossover but VW started changing the design of the early. Flared rear arches, front disc brakes, narrow 5 wheels etc.
