You're right, they are flared. '71 already had flared rear arches, but non flared at front.

I've been called Tipi since the second grade, about 25 years or so.

They are anodized from factory, not lacquired. Anodizing gives hard and durable aluminum oxide surface to aluminum parts. If you try to polish the trim, you should remove the anodizing first. If I remember right it comes off easily with 'lye' which came out from dictionary as * caustic soda...

Used OEM reverse lights costs practically nothing, why not go with those? Or if you do not want make big holes, get those separate typ3 ones. Hella is actually making them still, and you are able to order them via local Hella dealer. Not cheap though. You can get repro red lenses to them also...
