Check the coil. Last time my bus died, it felt like running out of fuel, but it was my flamethrower that suddenly failed. I just replaced it with a blue coil and everything was fine.
Oh yes😎 i've had my bus for 11-12 years and always had this issue. I simply added a door bell, which starts the engine, when ignition is on. It's a kind of anti theft device 😁
I use a Skoda starter, from a TDI model. Powerfull and self supporting . It just need a little mod to mount on a 3 rib box. And i also use a hard start relay, to ensure full power to the starter.
Let's say 50£ instead of 60£.
Buy before you guys leave EU !.
i'll swap with Slater plug in for 110V 1968/69 version, the one on the left side.

Nice set of Hella H4 head lights for your 68-73 bus.
Bougth from Just Kampers, found out they were for 'left lane traffic', replaced them with 'right lane traffic' versions.
Used by me, is a real upgrade to the old us sealed beam lights.
Price is for both:

Hello
Do you have any power inlets (is it called that ?) you know the one to plug in electric power on the side of a earlybay westy, either 110V or 230V.

And when you have changed the bush and inspected the starter you might have advantage of fitting a 'hard start relay'.

You can create your own kit, just use a relay that can handle the power, eg 80 A. And a 16 A fuse.

Quick update..five years later.
I did move the hole locomotive so the gearshift is now perfect.
The engine has worked well over the years.
You can actually cruise through Europe with a constants speed of 110-120 km/h with that setup.
The engine will now go into next level: smaller carburetors...
